All projects of this type start with meetings and discussions with a wide range of stakeholders, as well as site surveys to measure and document the characteristics of the venue. The TOGETHER project had some challenging features: To design a system that would perform the duties of both speech and music (AKA minimum spectral variance and minimum level variance in the words of Bob McCarthy of Meyer Sound), to cover a significant amount of space to accommodate the target of one million attendees, and to minimize noise pollution into the national monuments surrounding the Washington Monument grounds.

Political events are a very specific animal. The live audience is mostly in place to add the sense of community and energy to the event to be captured by the press, and transmission to the target audience; the millions of television, radio and internet viewers. Sound system design in these situations is a critical balance between the intelligibility, clarity and power we strive to provide for an engaged live audience, with the limits of multiple critical sight-lines, and isolation of the primary microphones needed by the broadcast team, all within an extremely tight time-frame.

Festival sound in the U.S. has generally been like our cars; big, loud, and unapologetic. For the municipalities surrounding the Del Mar Fairgrounds, this was not an option. Sound system design, at this point in the arc of technology, is not capable of providing 110dBA to the audience, with a level drop to 60dBA in the neighborhoods 1,200 ft. from the stages. A cohesive collaboration was necessary between the Production Management of Leo Events, with the noise data collection gear and systems of ECTO Productions, the expertise of Solotech as the audio vendor, all with the exceptional talents of our acoustical spokesperson, Pantelis Vassilakis, PHD.
